Nutrition project gives children hope in Mzimba

M’Mbelwa District Council nutrition officer Gift Simkonda says the International Support and Partnership for Health (Isaph) nutrition project will prevent more children from malnutrition.

The project, running with funding from Jica, will strengthen nutrition response and improve health for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and under-five children.

Speaking on Monday when Isaph introduced the new project dubbed Model Project for Sustainable Health Group Nutrition Activities by Local Communities, Simkonda said the project will help to reduce malnutrition through food security and tailored interventions.

He said: “We will work with various structures as we have done with other projects before. We believe that together we can make a significant impact on the nutrition and health outcomes of our communities.

“The project will involve community-level nutrition activities to ensure community participation and development.”

In his remarks, Isaph country director Sakuma Yamamoto said they will work with communities to create sustainable food systems that promote healthy diets and reduce malnutrition.

“We are excited to launch this new project in Mzimba, which

will help improve nutrition and health outcomes for local communities. Our goal is to work with local communities to promote healthy diets and reduce malnutrition levels in Mzimba,” he said.

Isaph senior field coordinator John Banda said the three-year project runs from April this year to 2028 in traditional authorities Chindi, Kampingo Sibande and Mabilabo.

“To ensure the project’s sustainability, we will train government structures and use government policies and guidelines,” he said.

The project will establish an activity model for frontline workers, particularly health surveillance assistants to strengthen community-based nutrition services through implementing community-led interventions targeting pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and under-five children in eight health posts
